Groningen English Study Short Program 2011 (University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands)

Aug. 22, 2011, midnight - Sept. 11, 2011, midnight

The 6th Appetizer program was held in University of Groningen from 22 August until 11 September. This year eight students attended from the Schools of Foreign Studies (3), Law (3), Economics (1) and Letters (1). Thirteen two-hour English lessons were arranged by the university’s Language Centre consisting of presentation classes by a British teacher and writing classes by an American teacher.

As well as the academic classes, students also had Dutch studies and a Japanese lecture. At the beginning of the programme most of the students couldn’t speak English confidently, but in the final presentation every student gave a 10 minute presentation satisfactorily with confidence.

On the social programme there were excursions to Amsterdam and Utrecht, as well as a visit to a Dutch family home to learn a little about the Dutch way of life.  A Japanese company visit (Kikkoman Europe) and a bus trip (to gain an insight into the Dutch history of land reclamation) were also arranged.

Every year these kinds of events are always included in this Appetizer programme in addition to the English learning, and are recognized as charm points of the programme.

There are many comments from the students: “In the Netherlands, English is spoken everywhere. We recommend this programme to the students who are expecting to study abroad in the future, to gain a taste of what it is like to study abroad.
